7 Islands Arts Exhibition

Bere Island Arts Festival invited artists from the 7 Islands of West Cork (Bere Island, Long Island, Dursey Island, Whiddy Island, Oileán Chléire, Sherkin Island and Heir Island) to submit work for this year’s arts festival. This is a jury selected exhibition.

Sarah Walker

Sarah Walker is a visual artist living and working on the Beara Peninsula, West Cork. She grew up in Dublin and studied Fine Art Painting at the National College of Art and Design. In 1991 she moved to live permanently in Beara and opened the Sarah Walker Gallery in 2000. The gallery is situated on the pier in Castletownbere and is home to Walker’s studio. Sarah Walker has had a series of solo exhibitions in Oliver Sears Gallery, The Hallward Gallery, Dublin and The Fenton Gallery, Cork amongst other solo exhibitions in Ireland and abroad. She has exhibited in numerous selected shows around Ireland including EV+A and the RHA annual exhibition. She has exhibited internationally in London, Denmark, USA, Mexico, Japan and represented Ireland in the 26th Festivale de la Peinture, Cagnes sur Mer, France.

Alan Macilwraith

Alan Macilwraith is an Architect with Jack Coughlan Architects and has been to the fore of many of the practice’s recent projects: Nano Nagle Place, Cork School of Architecture, Spike Island, Camden Fort Meagher, Mercy Cancer CARE Centre, Baltimore Harbour Facility and Michael Collins House, Clonakilty. Active in the life of Cork through involvement with Open House Cork, former Board Member of Sirius Arts Centre, and as Designer of The Choice Machine Pavilion at Design Pop Festival and CORKUMNAVIGATION with Meitheal Mara.

Paul McAree

Paul McAree is Curator at Lismore Castle Arts in Co Waterford, which has hosted solo exhibitions by artists including Gerard Byrne, Anne Collier, Dorothy Cross, Camille Henrot, Rashid Johnson and Wilhelm Sasnal. Previously McAree worked at Breaking Ground, Tate Modern and Ikon Gallery Birmingham, and also runs an occasional commissioning project, FLOOD. He co-founded and directed Colony Gallery in Birmingham from 2007 – 2010. He has curated freelance projects, co-curating Traces at Kasteel Wijlre, The Netherlands in 2018, was curator in residence at Rua Red from 2014-2016, and curator in residence at Temple Bar Gallery, 2012-2013. He is a Board Member for both Temple Bar Gallery + Studios and Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh.
