Bere Island Writing Retreats Poetry Competition Judge

Enda Wyley was born in Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin and has published six collections of poetry with Dedalus Press: The Painter on his Bike (2019), Borrowed Space, New and Selected Poems (2014), To Wake to This (2009), Poems for Breakfast (2004), Socrates in the Garden (1998) and Eating Baby Jesus (1993). Awards include the Vincent Buckley Poetry Prize; Melbourne University and she was a recipient of a Katherine and Patrick Kavanagh Fellowship for Poetry.

Enda has been a judge for several competitions, including the International Dublin Literary Award, the Redline Poetry Festival and Strokestown International Poetry Festival. She has co-hosted with poet Peter Sirr the popular podcast Books for Breakfast, about books and writing and Stanza, a poetry programme for RTE Radio 1. She is a member of Aosdána, the Irish academy of artists.

Conditions of Entry

Bere Island Writing Retreats International Poetry Prize

Judged by Enda Wyley

Stipulation: The word island must appear somewhere in the poem (either in the body of the poem or in the title).

Conditions of entry

  1. The competition closes at midnight (GMT) August 10th 2024.

  2. Poems must be in English

  3. Poems must not exceed 40 lines and be single spaced typed.

  4. All poems must be the original work of the entrant and not previously published in any form and not be accepted for publication elsewhere prior to the closing date of the competition.

  5. Entrants can submit as many entries as they wish at €5 per entry.

  6. Fee can be paid to the following bank account IE39AIBK93627810304087. Please use your name as reference for payment.

  7. All entries will receive confirmation of receipt of entry.

  8. The author's name and address should not appear on the same field as the poem. Use the entry form to provide your personal details.

  9. All poems are judged anonymously. The judge's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

  10. No alterations can be made to the poems once entered to the competition.

  11. Bere Island Writing Retreats reserves the right to arrange publication on it or other the Bere Island Arts Festival website and/or festival publications. Copyright remains with the author.

  12. The three prize recipients will be invited to read at the Bere Island Arts Festival on Saturday 21st September.

  13. The word island should appear somewhere in the body of the poem or in the title.

  14. Submission of a poem implies the competitor's acceptance of the conditions outlined above.  

Prizes:  €300 (1st), €200 (2nd), €100 (3rd).
