Islanders’ Art Exhibition Opening

Four Bere Island Artists come together to showcase their work. This exhibition will feature a variety of artwork inspired by Bere Island and its surroundings, including drawings, photographic images, sculptures, and quilting.

Michael Killen

Born in Dublin, Michael graduated from Dunlaoghaire School of Art majoring in Sculpture and Fine Art and then received a scholarship to study in the Academy of Fine Art in Florence Italy. He subsequently moved to Pietrasanta in the Carrara marble area just north of Pisa where he worked under the direction of a family of stone sculptors. On his return to Ireland he assisted the German sculptor Imogen Stuart in a series of her larger commissions and then established his own studio. He has executed public and private commissions for public bodies such as Fingal County Council, The Department of Education and Science and many others. He has exhibited in the Jorgensen Fine Art Gallery (Dublin), The Royal Ulster Academy (Belfast), The Graphic Studio Gallery (Dublin), Kenny’s Gallery (Galway) and in the Irish Embassy in Berlin (Germany).

Michael and his family have been coming to Bere Island since 1965 where the community and the Island’s environment have had a very significant influence on his work.

Harriet Andrews

Originally from London, Harriet has lived on Bere Island for over 20 years where she and her husband have a small organic beef and vegetable farm. She is a writer and quilter and, when she has time, enjoys restoring vintage doll’s houses.

Caitríona Hanley

Caitríona graduated from Crawford College of Art and Design with a degree in Fine Art in 2002. Her family is from Bere Island, and childhood holidays were spent there in the family home. Summers on the island gave her a passion for hiking, swimming, kayaking, and all things outdoors which led to her realising her dream and opening Wild Atlantic Glamping in 2021. Caitríona’s work is strongly influenced by her relationship to the island. Through temporary interventions in the landscape, she explores themes around memory, nostalgia, and our connection to the land.

Marta Crowley

Originally from Poland, Marta made her home in Ireland 18 years ago and further planted roots on Bere Island in 2020. She takes special inspiration from nature whether it is flowers, leaves, trees, driftwood, and sea glass (she’s not disclosing her special hunting ground for that material). However, the main muses of her life are her three children who notice art and beauty in the most unusual things. She doesn’t have a favourite medium but takes special joy in watercolours, acrylics, oil pastels, and wood art.
