The Hold by Mary Sullivan

Mary Sullivan is a visual and performance artist based on Bere Island, Co. Cork. Her work draws inspiration from Bere Island's picturesque surroundings and its rich military history. She also draws inspiration from the people that inhabit the island and domestic life. Working through the medium of sculpture, photography, videography, and performance, Mary's work often uncovers aspects of life that often appear unstudied by the media. Recent projects include Breathe and The Hold.

The Hold stitches together the lives of twenty-four women living in isolation amidst a pandemic, fronting the act of community creativity and collaboration in a world where the traditional threads of life have become frayed. The Hold creates a new site of possibility on an island where the ordinary becomes extraordinary through the documentation of the lived experiences of island women.

Mary is a recipient of the RDS Taylor Award and the 2021 Arts Council Visual Arts Bursary , Round 1. She is currently working towards her own solo exhibition in Uillinn, West Cork Arts Centre, Skibbereen, titled From the Inside Out and the Outside In. With this ongoing body of work, she seeks to highlight island identity and its related perceptions.
